Roseville Pottery History
Roseville Pottery was founded in 1890. Prior to 1900 the company initially produced utilitarian ware. Roseville Rozane was the first hand-decorated, high-quality art pottery line produced by Roseville. Roseville went on to produce over 100 quality art pottery patterns. Many of the patterns include highly decorative floral patterns. Roseville Pottery ceased operations in 1954.
Roseville Pottery Marks
Roseville used many marks during its years of production. The popular middle period Roseville patterns were originally marked with foil or paper labels and didn't have any incised or raised Roseville trademarks. This often confuses new collections and can sometimes make them assume the pieces are fake or reproductions.
After 1935, Roseville began using an impressed Roseville Pottery stamp and the corresponding shape number and size. In 1940, the mark was changed to a raised Roseville USA trademark as well as the appropriate shape number and size. With a little research the Roseville marking system is easy to understand.
Which Roseville Patterns to Start Collecting
New Roseville collectors are often unsure which patterns to start collecting. Beyond just buying what they like; they are often unsure how to identify reproductions and are also concerned about buying quality pottery that has any damage or repair accurately described. The high prices seen for middle period patterns such as Baneda, Cherry Blossom, Falline, Ferella, Futura, Pinecone, Sunflower, and Wisteria are often beyond what a new pottery collector wants to pay for their first investment in Roseville.
So to help new pottery collectors we have developed a list of Roseville patterns that are less expensive today but still represent a good investment. These patterns allow beginning Roseville pottery collectors to start a collection with a lower initial investment and provide good opportunity for longer term price appreciation.
